As some of you may have read in the literacy magazine this year, Ty’s have raised over €??? for various charities which is incredible for a relatively small year group. I'm here to talk to you all briefly about what I did to contribute to this total.
My Uncle Geoffrey Brabazon was killed in 1998, twenty years ago this year. He was a 23 year old tree surgeon, working on felling an old tree when a branch from another tree fell killing him. If he had survived he would have been severely brain damaged but would have been taken care of by the Open Door. My grandmother was already involved in the Open Door and was on the fundraising committee. After his death due to the support from the organisation, my family donated money yearly.
I decided in December to shave my head for the charity to raise money in the name of my uncle. Although head shaving is more associated with cancer I felt it was something that people get behind.
I managed to raise €2,800 Which I was overly thrilled by. I didn't think I'd raise near as much. When I went to drop my donation to the centre I was greeted by Suzanne Cox the Manager at the centre. She gave me a tour of the amazing centre and I got to meet some incredible people. I then went out to the small garden to see an old bench beside a tree planted in my uncles memory.
I would like to thank everyone who helped me in this process and donated to the cause especially to Mr. Clement Wilson one of my uncles oldest friends who has donated £1,000 to the Open Door. I would encourage anyone to raise money for charities like the Open Door in any way you can whether it's something large or small it all makes a difference to these organisations.
