Monday 23rd and Tuesday 24th of October 2017, I would take part in a self defence course with my class mates. During this two day course we were taught how to intercept attacks, retaliate, how to disarm an attacker of weapons, and to know when the best option is to flee, e.g the attacker has a weapon.
During day 2 we practised grappling. This involves both you and your attacker ending up on the ground. We were taught how to overcome the attacker and come out on top. We also practised intercepting "haymaker" attacks and taking down the attacker to the ground. We also practised sparring pairs.
At the end of day 2 there was a physical examination which tied together all of the techniques we’d learned over the two days with pushups, sprints, and burpees which felt like it took forever.
Where the push-ups, sprints and burpees may not help you defend yourself, the course definitely opened my eyes to how strategic an attack can be and not just a panicked arm fling.
Overall I thought the course was an enjoyable experience and I learned a lot of great useful techniques that I will hopefully never have to use.
