For Three days in April starting on the 16th our year would undergo an advanced First Aid Course focused particularly on CPR and Resuscitation.
On the first day we were split into groups with one instructor per group. My group began the first day with how to perform good and fast cpr.
We started by watching promotional videos by ex footballer Vinnie Jones for the British heart foundation where he taught us to perform cor to the tune of hit song Staying Alive by the Beegees. We then got to use special mannequins designed for practicing cpr in pairs to try and get our cpr in tune to the song.
After lunch we were taught how to make 2 different splints and 3 different bandage wraps for particular different injuries, which we were agin allowed to practice in pairs.
The second day we learned about many different things including the very useful knowledge of how to use an épi pen if somebody is having a severe allergic reaction. Our instructor showed us how to apply the injection and help them recover while waiting for an ambulance that we should have called before using the épi pen.
The second period was spent learning about cardiac arrests and got properly use a defibrillator and bow to use our cpr learned on day 1 to Aid us in saving somebody's life. We saw videos of proffesionals using defibrillators on people who were suffering cardiac arrests and others of how a special defibrillator/pacemaker can be implanted for people with heart problems in case of a cardiac arrest.
Day 3 was when we had our practical exams. We started with a drill rehearsal in pairs of how we would respond if somebody collapsed infront of us in a supposed cardiac arrest. We would start with cpr while our partner called an ambulance and grabbed the nearest defibrillator. We would then take turns delivering shocks and performing cpr for a minute till the drill was over.
We were then examined on our bandage and splint skills before we finished early before lunch. I enjoyed the Course and I feel as if it should be manditory in all schools. I hope I will never have to use these skills but if I do end up in one of those horrible situations I can help to give that person their best chance at life.
